for a full accounting of the benghazi terrorist attacks and the events in yemen and egypt. the white house continues to give every appearance of stone walling, both the congress and the press. almost three weeks have passed since those attacks, and leaked from within the white house, an intelligence community suggests the obama administration has been involved in an outright cover up. there are reports tonight that officials within the administration were concerned from the very beginning about the message the white house chose to push after the attack. the attack that was spontaneous they said, and not at all the work of terrorists. here's white house spokesman jay carney back on the 14th of september. >> the incident in benghazi, as well as elsewhere, but these are all being investigated, what i'm saying is that we have no evidence at this time to suggest otherwise, that there was a preplanned or alterior investigation behind the unrest. my point was that we don't have and did not have concrete evidence to suggest that this was not in reaction to the film. lou: he's referring to the almo

. chris went to benghazi in the early days of the libyan revolution, arriving on a cargo ship. as america's representative, he helped the libyan people as they coped with violent conflict, cared for the wounded, and crafted a vision for the future in which the rights of all libyans would be respected. and after the revolution, he supported the birth of a new democracy, as libyans held elections, and built new institutions, and began to move forward after decades of dictatorship. chris stevens loved his work. he took pride in the country he served, and he saw dignity in the people that he met. and two weeks ago, he traveled to benghazi to review plans to establish a new cultural center and modernize a hospital. that's when america's compound came under attack. along with three of his colleagues, chris was killed in the city that he helped to save. he was 52 years old. i tell you this story because chris stevens embodied the best of america. like his fellow foreign service officers, he built bridges across oceans and cultures, and was deeply invested in the international cooperation that th

at the benghazi consulate?" you pick up "the new york times" and you get a blow-by-blow description of what supposedly went o. so it was like pulling teeth to get information yesterday. a lot of senators were frustrated. and you pick up major newspapers in the country and you find details not shared with you. and one of the things i'm worried about is we're trying to find out who committed these terrible acts of terrorism -- and they were acts of terrorism, not a spontaneous riot -- i said, what is the game plan? will they be held as enemy exatents, are they going to be held as common criminals? will they be prosecuted in libya? will they be brought back to the united states? do you have to read them their miranda rights? really absolutely not a whole lot of information. but at the end of the day, it was a lost opportunity i think to inform the congress. can we now move to the rand paul amendment? mr. mccain: mr. president, i'd like to take what remaining time we have in order to discuss the paul amendment. and i'd like to begin by asking insertion in the -- in the "congressional record" a

administration handled this? we have learned at cnn that the u.s. consulate in benghazi did not meet standard u.s. consulate security requirements. this is obviously a rather damning thing to be discovering at this point, considering what ended up happening there. jon huntsman told me he thinks consulates there who are not beefed up on security, shouldn't the administration be responding to that? >> i think the administration is responding to it. the state department goes to regular security procedures all over the world and updates them to take into account how the situation on the ground changes. i spent a lot of time in iraq and as we were transitioning from our military presence there to the state department presence there, we looked very closely at the security procedures at our con sue lates and embassies. so i expect in the aftermath of these incidents, there will be another review and steps will be taken to improve security where needed. >> let's talk about libya and the mixed messages. it still seems confusing to me. on the 16th of september, our ambassador called the attacks spontaneo

are demanding answers about security concerns at the u.s. diplomatic office in benghazi, libya, leading up to the attack that killed ambassador chris stevens and three other meamericans. members of the senate foreign relations committee have sent a letter to secretary hillary clinton cite about concerns of threats there. a preliminary settlement requires the university of california to pay $30,000 to each of one of 21 protesters hit by pepper spray from the university police during occupy demonstrations at uc davis last november. a copy of the settlement puts aside additional funds for the plaintiff's attorneys and protesters arrested during this incident. now turning to a lighter moment on the campaign trail today. at a campaign stop in ohio puic presintial candidate mitt romney was joined by mike row, the host of the di"dirty jobs" he spoke about his appreciation for jobs that most people don't want and his appreciation for meat most people don't want as well. take a listen. >> you'll be pleased to know, ohio, that you do in fact have a road kill cleanup division. and they are excellent
